Swine Flu Vaccine May Cause Guillain-Barre Syndrome

September 1, 2009 - Neurologists should be vigilant in tracking any new cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome after patients have received the H1N1 flu vaccine, say officials. The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) is teaming up with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to make sure doctors remain alert.

Guillain-Barré has been linked to several vaccines, including the preparation for the 1976 swine flu. In a statement issued by the AAN, experts said that although they do not expect the 2009 H1N1 vaccine to increase the risk for the autoimmune disease, this is a concern with any pandemic vaccine. "The active participation of neurologists is going to be critical for monitoring for any possible increase in Guillain-Barré following 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccination," AAN spokesperson Orly Avitzur, MD, said in a news release.

The H1N1 vaccine is currently in production. High-risk groups will be encouraged to receive the vaccine this fall. Infants, children, young adults, pregnant women, adults 25 years and older with underlying health conditions, and healthcare workers are considered good candidates for the vaccine.
(In other words, every person on the planet)  Doctors are being asked to report adverse events using the standard CDC and US Food and Drug Administration Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System.

Guillain-Barré affects 1 to 4 people per 100,000 annually around the world. It causes respiratory failure requiring ventilation in an estimated 25% of people, and between 4% and 15% die.

What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome?

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a serious disorder that occurs when the body's defense (immune) system mistakenly attacks part of the nervous system. This leads to nerve inflammation that causes muscle weakness, which continues to get worse.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Guillain-Barre get worse very quickly. It may take only a few hours to reach the most severe symptoms.

Muscle weakness or the loss of muscle function (paralysis) affects both sides of the body. If the muscle weakness starts in the legs and then spreads to the arms, it is called ascending paralysis.

Patients may notice tingling, foot or hand pain, and clumsiness. As the loss of muscle function gets worse, the patient may need breathing assistance.

What is the prognosis?

Guillain-Barré syndrome can be a devastating disorder because of its sudden and unexpected onset. Most people reach the stage of greatest weakness within the first 2 weeks after symptoms appear, and by the third week of the illness 90 percent of all patients are at their weakest. The recovery period may be as little as a few weeks or as long as a few years. About 30 percent of those with Guillain-Barré still have a residual weakness after 3 years. About 3 percent may suffer a relapse of muscle weakness and tingling sensations many years after the initial attack.

And It Gets Better!!

As if the possibility of getting this Syndrome was not enough.  How would you know, before getting the vaccine, if you were going to be one of the people who develop this Syndrome?  Simply, you wouldn't.  Can the doctors who administer the vaccine (or their staff) guarantee you will not get this Syndrome?  Simply, No, there is no way for them to guarantee this.  What's important to appreciate is that if you do get the vaccine, and if you do have a health issue that results form the vaccine, did you know the government, our government, has already put in legislation that makes the manufacturer, the doctors and their staff free from any responsibility for the health concern.  Stated differently, you have no one to blame for any adverse reaction to getting this new vaccine.  There is no one who will take responsibility for you if you develop a problem as a result of this new vaccine.  Not your insurance company, not the government, certainly not the doctor or their staff.  Isn't that great?

Take the time to click on any of the above links related to this story and read a little before considering getting this vaccination.  Appreciate how this is being forced upon all of us with no recourse for adverse events.  It is time to take responsibility for ourselves and our dependents.  Get educated before taking on anything new.  Especially if it is going to be injected into your body, bypassing all your normal defense mechanisms, in an effort to build a defense.  Does the farmer feel better once the fox is in the hen house?  Would the farmer feel empowered by choosing to put the fox in the hen house in an effort to develop immunity from his chickens being eaten by the fox?  Does any of that make any sense when it comes to building a better defense?  I think you know the answer to that question.
