Chiropractic adjustment is a procedure in which trained specialists (chiropractors) use their hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled, sudden force to a spinal joint. The goal of chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation, is to correct structural alignment and improve your body's physical function. This will help restore normal Nervous System communication between your brain and every cell, tissue, organ or gland in your body.
What is Spinal Manipulation
Spinal manipulation is a therapeutic intervention performed on spinal articulations which are synovial joints. These articulations in the spine that are amenable to spinal manipulative therapy include the z-joints, the atlanto-occipital, atlanto-axial, lumbosacral, sacroiliac, costotransverse and costovertebral joints. Although it can be performed by Osteopaths, and rarely physical therapists, Chiropractors are trained specifically to use it as their primary form of intervention to health imbalances.
Can I adjust myself?
Many times you may notice people who "crack" their neck or back with a twist or turn of their head or body. And they will tell you it "feels better" after they do it. Unfortunately, what the person may not know is it is never normal to be able to self adjust a joint in the body, as this creates extra stress on that joint and will eventually lead to joint breakdown over time. The joint(s) they are able to adjust themselves are hypermobile joints that are the body's response to the true problem, the hypomobile joint(s). These hypomobile joint(s) are a result of a more serious health imbalance. Therefore, it is never advised to adjust yourself and if you are able to do that, it warrants a discussion with a chiropractor about what you are doing and what should be done to help the situation.
Work with a Holistic Chiropractor
When one has health imbalances and would prefer to get to the source of the problem and address the concern as fully as possible, consulting with a Holistic Chiropractor will help you to do that. By addressing the 6 different causes of a health concern will allow for the most complete care possible. If you do not address the whole picture, conditions get worse with time and lead to unneccessary pain and sufferring.
