2009 Start The New Year Healthy
2009 has been named the Year of Transformation. In an effort to help you Transform your Health, here are some simple strategies to Start Your New Year Healthy. Consider implementing any of these 5 practices. Ideally doing all 5 would be best, but you can certainly change your health and change your life by simply changing one thing. And with the freedom to choose, I give you the choice of picking the one or more for you to do, and your health will begin to improve.
1) Drink the proper amount of water for your weight every day. This should be 1 quart for every 50 lbs. you weigh, everyday. By simply getting your body properly hydrated and then maintaining that practice, will enable your metabolism and organ function to process without much difficulty. Being dehydrated slows the whole system down, so any increase in water will improve the function of your body. With Kidney Health Month being right now, this is probably the most important of the 5.
2) Breathe properly by breathing fully into your belly, instead of your chest. Most people do this backwards. When you take air into your lungs, your diaphragm should move down, pushing your belly out. Then when you breathe out, your belly returns to its original position. This form of breathing creates a pumping action that massages your digestive organs and allows for better digestion and much less constipation. The movement of the diaphragm also helps you process emotions in a normal fashion which should help you feel better emotionally.
3) Eat well. This means taking more time to think about what you eat while taking the time to get the food so you can. Quick meals and Fast Food are the quickest way to a health problem. Try to utilize more whole foods, natural foods and foods prepared with the least amount of additives/preservatives and heat. Heat destroys vital nutrients, especially if it is cooked in a microwave. Microwaves superheat your foods causing denaturization of the nutrients, effectively making them unusable by the body as fuel. One of the best things you can do is stop using a microwave.
4) Get proper amounts of sleep. Ideally, 7 - 8 hours of high quality, non rest-less sleep. 60 million Americans suffer from occasional sleeplessness leading to less than optimal daily functioning. Setting your schedule to wind down so you can be ready for a good nights sleep is important. Don't continue to do busy work right up to bed time. Don't eat within 3 hours of bed. Don't watch the news just before bed. Images of violence and crime have an effect on your ability to relax. Make sure the room you sleep in is comfortable, away from noise and drafts.
5) Exercise regularly. This means 3 - 4 times a week for 30 minutes or more of aerobic type activity such as walking, the elliptical machine, bicycle, treadmill, or stair master. Weights are appropriate too, but for improving your health, the aerobic activity is far more beneficial.
