Medical and Healthcare Ambiguity:  Don’t get stuck in oblivion

I was in a meeting this morning and the word that came up in the meeting was about miscommunication, poor communication and ambiguity.  My immediate response was “This is what I seem to experience everyday in my practice.”  People from all over the tri-state area drive to my office, or people from all over the country call or e-mail me with questions, looking for clarity to their Medical and Healthcare Ambiguity.  And after some simple and pointed questions, I am able to create clarity for them and help them on the path to resolution of their health concern. 

It was just yesterday I was next door at Orange Radiology, my neighbor who does great work and helps people gain clarity with the services they offer.  While I was waiting for the front desk girl to help me meet with the radiologist to discuss some films I had to go over with them, the gentleman standing at the counter next to me was there for an MRI of his brain.  Since I had walked in with him and held the door for him, it seemed like we already had established a connection.  So when his paperwork was on the counter next to me, I noticed he was there for an MRI and had some hand written notes that indicated his chief complaint (passing out) and all the testing they had already done.  So I asked him what happened, and he shared he had passed out twice for no apparent reason and he has had a bunch of testing done with no reason yet for his problem, so he was here to see if there was anything wrong with his brain.  The word that came to mind was “ambiguity.”  He had already experienced several thousands of dollars in testing with absolutely ZERO results. 

His medical team (yes, he had a team of doctors working on his case) had not come up with a logical or illogical reason for his passing out.  So they were hoping an MRI of the brain would add some clarity to his problem and perhaps after the MRI they could come up with a diagnosis and a treatment plan.  Now mind you, all of this “testing” had taken place over several weeks (about 2 months) and they still had no working diagnosis to justify why he had passed out.  The good news was he had not had a heart attack as his ECG was “normal,” his blood work was “normal,” his ultrasound was “normal,” his endoscopy was “normal,” his chest x-ray was “normal,” and his physical exam was “unremarkable.”  So his perspective was he had nothing serious as all the testing confirmed he had no major disease process going on that could be discerned from all the “testing.”  And for that he was grateful.  

Now, as if the stress of not knowing wasn’t enough, putting him through all the stress of going for tests, expecting and maybe even hoping for the worst so he would finally have an answer, and to do this for several weeks would only contribute to his imbalance and perhaps create a new one. 

As a Holistic Chiropractor who deals with these kinds of concerns and conditions regularly, I know that the part of the body that regulates passing out (yes, there is a part of your body that does this) is the Adrenal Glands and the Adrenal System.  These are also the part of the body that regulates and monitors a person’s stress response.  With several weeks of testing and no conclusive results, his stress levels are through the roof leading to further adrenal depletion and potential for more passing out.
