Did You Take Your Calcium Today?
When I ask a New Practice Member what vitamins or supplements they are taking, almost all of them reply with a calcium product in their arsenal. And when I ask them why they are taking the calcium supplement, the typical response is usually to maintain healthy bones and to prevent Osteoporosis. So my question to you as the subscriber is, "Do you really need to take a calcium supplement?" "How can you tell?" "Which calcium supplement product do you choose?" "And why?"
Without dispute, calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body? The body uses calcium for the following functions: muscle contractions; bone, muscle, and teeth formation; and most importantly, Immune System function. But with each of these functions, the calcium assimilation is quite complex, requiring other factors outside of just calcium. These factors include other minerals, such as magnesium and phosphorus; trace minerals, such as zinc and manganese; vitamins, such as D and B; essential fatty acids; and an acid /base balance within the body.
One must begin by addressing the fundamentals when it comes to understanding calcium and how it is used by the body. Calcium is absorbed mainly in the duodenum, the first portion of the Small Intestine after the Stomach. The duodenum is a highly acidic environment (the more acidic, the greater the absorption of calcium). If a person has a low stomach acid, they will have an extremely difficult time absorbing calcium. (Remember, antacids or medications that suppress acid secretion of the stomach will cut down or stop the absorption of calcium as well.) If low stomach acid exists, correct this problem with a product such as Betaine HCl or Zypan to assure calcium is being absorbed from your food sources as well as calcium supplements.
Next, decide what you want to accomplish with calcium supplementation based on the different functions calcium has in the body. If you are dealing with muscle cramps, the Immune response, or the Inflammatory response and tissue regeneration, Calcium Lactate is the best source of calcium to use. Calcium Lactate and calcium citrate are extremely soluble and bioavailable in the body. Calcium Lactate is not derived from a dairy source; it is made through a fermentation process with sugar beets. Also consider using Cataplex F, a source of essential fatty acids (EFAs). EFAs combine with Calcium Lactate to help diffuse the calcium from the blood into the tissues.
For people with delayed or poor Immune Response, people who get sick often and have difficulty fighting infection, those who develop fevers, or just don't feel quite right, appreciate that Calcium Lactate in conjunction with Cataplex C helps to boost the Immune Response. My next newsletter will discuss the importance of understanding what's in your Vitamin C, and allowing you to "C" the difference.
If however the goal of calcium supplementation is to build strong bones and prevent Osteoporosis, Calcifood is recommended. Calcifood containes veal bone; it is much more then just a calcium supplement. Consider adding Cataplex D for those who lack adequate sun exposure. Vitamin D assists in the absorption of calcium from the body and helps support the maintenance of calcium in the bones. If you are a person who has inflammatory responses, part of the sinus system becomes alkaline over time. Cal-Amo contains acidifying compounds as well as Calcium Lactate to acidify the system.
If your body needs additional support for the calcium utilization, consider Cal-Ma Plus, which contains Calcium Lactate with Parathyroid tissue, the master gland in controlling calcium metabolism.
What This Means To You
If your body is deficient in calcium, or if you are concerned with developing Osteoporosis, you'll want to consider my offer below. If you have delayed or poor Immune response, this is the time of year you'll really want to "bone up" on your calcium supplementation. Since having, or not having, adequate blood calcium levels will directly effect your Immune response, you'll want to consider supplementing your calcium levels. If you have poor stomach acid secretion, take over the counter antacids or stronger prescription antacids, you will definitely need to supplement your calcium levels. If you consume lots of carbonated beverages, which are high in phosphorus, you will want to stop that immediately and increase you calcium supplementation. Since having too much phosphorus will cause your body to lose calcium from its bones, stopping these carbonated beverages will absolutely help you restore calcium balance.
